Abstract:

Letters mainly to Eleanor and Henry Elkins in New Hampshire from their niece C.G. Elkins and other family in California and in Farmington, Minn. Those written from Nicolaus (Sutter Co.), Hurleton (Butte Co.), describe children, family, home affairs, the large number of Chinese laborers making it hard for others to find work, the dress of a "regular Texan," the unearthing of a mastedon by the Sutter Co. teachers' institute, teaching school, poor conditions boarding as a teacher, marriage, grain harvesting equipment, sending money home for sick relatives, homes and ranch land, health benefits of living in California, the mix of ethnic groups, etc. Letters from Pasadena and San Diego describe life at home with children, a job at Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co., clothing, California fruits, the San Diego vicinity and real estate market, lawyers, dentists and other professionals in San Diego, , investment and business climate, fishing and hunting.
